Archery Guyana represented at the IX Copa Merengue in Santo Domingo

Team Guyana has once again done Archery Guyana proud at the 6th Caribbean Development Championships, which was held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, from September 19-22, 2024. Seven countries competed, namely; Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA. 

The Ranking rounds were held on Friday, September 20 and the following are the ranking scores for the men: Mehandra Chatargum 636, Jeewanram Persaud 619, Faraad Gani 606, Saifullah Gani 606, Gregory McKoy 605, Teemahall Lall 530, Richard Dookie 492, Saeed Karim 483, Alec Simmons 460, Afzal Karim 424.

The women’s ranking scores are: Juanita Persaud 627, Melesa Ramnaraine 600, Roshini Boodhoo 559, Fatima Gani 552, Julie-Ann Williams 502, Karin Toppin 425, Naudia Maraj 415, Nataliya Pollard 408, Theresa Jaikishun-Deoroop 306. 

The elimination matches were held on Saturday, September 21, which saw some very exciting matches with the archers aiming for the top brackets in the medal matches for the following day at the Plantation Cove venue.

The semi-final and final matches were played on Sunday with more exciting as there were surprises and upsets among archers shooting for the gold. 

A Special award was presented to Mr Philip Graves, chair of the World Archery Americas Development Committee, for his tireless commitment to the Caribbean Development Championships and archery.

Also receiving gifts of recognition from the Jamaican Archery Association were the head coaches from each country.

While Team Jamaica took a larger medal count: 25 (8 gold, 12 silver & 5 bronze), Guyana won a total of 23 medals; 15 gold, 5 sliver and 3 bronze, with the most gold medals awarded to Guyana in entire competition. Last year’s Recurve Mixed Team power couple Jeewanram Persaud and Roshini Boodhoo took the gold again in this year’s Mixed Team matches, as did last year’s Barebow Mixed Team of Teemahall Lall and Nataliya Pollard.

Trinidad & Tobago followed with a total of 13 medals (7 gold, 3 silver & 3 bronze). The British Virgin Islands took a total of 7 medals (2 gold, 2 silver & 3 bronze), Bahamas’ medal total was 6 (3 gold, 1 silver & 2 bronze), Barbados followed with 5 (4 silver & 1 bronze), and USA 2 (2 gold medals)

Additionally, in the mixed teams where archers from 2 different countries were paired, Jamaica & Guyana won silver, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago won bronze, and Guyana and Barbados won bronze.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon expressed her immense pride in Guyana's representation in Jamaica with such an incredible success. According to her, every one of the participants from various affiliated clubs in Guyana performed to their best. “They brought their very best to the field, and it is their talent, dedication, and perseverance that truly made this tournament special. Without their commitment, countless hours of training, and perseverance through all obstacles, none of this would have been possible. I am reminded of how far we’ve come from 2018 when Archery Guyana hosted the inaugural Level 1 coaching seminar. The global pandemic may have slowed us down for a couple of years, but within five years, despite the downtime, here we are, on the international stage, coming home with a very shiny collection of medals.”

The Guyanese archers impressed all who saw them compete and demonstrated true sportsmanship towards their fellow competitors while making friends at the same time. 

The Team was led by the following officials: Nicholas Hing - Chef-de-Mission/Head Coach, Saeed Karim – Team Logistics Coordinator/Archer, Roshini Boodhoo – Team Manager/Archer, Jeewanram Persaud – Coach/Archer, Juliana Rickhee – Team Support Coordinator, Shrikanta Deoroop – Team Photographer.

Archery Guyana remains committed to fostering the development of its athletes and raising the profile of the sport both locally and internationally. Team Guyana dominates at Archery CDC

Archery Guyana hosted an essential WADA/Anti-Doping Education Session on Saturday, September 7th, 2024. This event was conducted by the Board of Directors of Archery Guyana in collaboration with our Country Representative for Guyana on the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organization (RADO), and renowned Doping Control Officer, Dr. Karen Pilgrim. The session took place in the Boardroom of the Guyana Olympic Association, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.



This informative session aimed to introduce Archery Guyana's members and affiliates to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and educate them on the core principles of anti-doping. The initiative was designed to be particularly beneficial for both junior and senior members of Archery Guyana, affiliated clubs as well as the parents of our junior athletes. Special attention was given to the team expected to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Development Championships next week in Jamaica.



In today’s competitive sporting environment, it is more critical than ever to ensure that our athletes are well-versed in the importance of clean sport and the stringent regulations surrounding anti-doping. By providing this education, Archery Guyana is taking proactive steps to safeguard the integrity of our sport and to ensure that all our athletes, along with their support networks, understand their roles and responsibilities in adhering to these important standards.



Dr. Karen Pilgrim, with her extensive experience and expertise in the field of anti-doping, led the session, ensuring that participants gained valuable insights into the global efforts to maintain fairness in sport. The session covered key topics such as the WADA Code, prohibited substances and methods, the testing process, and the rights and responsibilities of athletes.



Archery Guyana is committed to promoting a culture of transparency, fairness, and respect for the rules that govern their sport. President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon opined, "We believe that this initiative will play a vital role in fostering a clean sporting environment and preparing our athletes for the highest levels of competition". Archery Guyana Hosts WADA/Anti-Doping Education Session to Ensure Clean Sport





Archery Guyana is excited to announce the support of Toucan Distributors, which has come on board to enhance the sport of archery in Guyana by donating funds for two high-quality archery buttresses. These buttresses are crucial for the training and development of archers, particularly in preparation for national competitions.



Mrs. Alana King, CEO of Toucan Distributors, recently handed over the funds to Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, President of Archery Guyana, in a small ceremony. The donation underscores Toucan Distributors’ commitment to supporting local sports and promoting excellence in archery.



Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon expressed her appreciation for the timely support from Toucan Distributors: "We are incredibly grateful to Mrs. Alana King and Toucan Distributors for their kind contribution. Archery Guyana is pleased to announce the generous support of El Dorado Security Service, which has contributed to the development of archery in Guyana by contributing towards two high-quality archery buttresses. This valuable contribution will greatly enhance the training capabilities, national competition standards and overall experience for archers across the country.



Recently, Ms. Rosannah Ali, Personal Assistant, formally handed over the funds to Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, President of Archery Guyana. The donation marks a significant step between El Dorado Security Service and Archery Guyana, showcasing a shared commitment to the growth and development of the sport.

El Dorado Security Service Lends Support to Archery Guyana with Donation towards procuring High-Quality Archery Buttresses

The Annual General Meeting of Archery Guyana Inc. was successfully held at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street on Friday 21st June, 2024, and members were therein given the opportunity to discuss activities and plans for the way forward to promote the Olympic sport of Archery in Guyana.

At the AGM, President, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon delivered a detailed report and background to the membership, from its establishment in August 2014 to date. This was followed by the delivery of a comprehensive Annual Report on all of the activities of the Federation, which was well received.

At the AGM, elections took place for the positions of Vice-President, Assistant Secretary, and Assistant Treasurer. The electoral process, known for its transparency and adherence to democratic principles, was conducted under the supervision of Mr. Siand Dhurjon, Attorney-at-Law.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon expressed thanks for the professionalism demonstrated and opined that she is pleased that this year saw the number of women coming forward to contest positions on the Board of Directors. This is indicative of gender parity and she encourages more women to step to the fore to take leadership positions. Regrettably, in spite of contenders such as Roshini Boodhoo, Melesa Ramnaraine, Samira Duncan and Narda Mohamed, the electorate did not favour them and the elected board whose tenure ends 2027 now comprises as follows:

* Secretary-General: Nicholas Hing 
* Assistant Secretary: Ryan McKinnon 
* Treasurer: Robert Singh
* Assistant Treasurer: Saeed Karim 

Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon concluded by urging continuous efforts toward gender balance and inclusivity within the Federation. "While we have made strides towards gender parity, there is still work to be done. I encourage more women to step up and lead. Their involvement is crucial to the diverse and dynamic future of Archery Guyana."

Archery Guyana is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that supports the development and participation of all members. The Federation looks forward to another year of growth, excellence, and increased engagement from its members.

The Externally Audited Financial Report was presented to the membership and was duly approved. Two motions were unanimously passed to amend the Constitution accordingly.

Archery Guyana Hosts Successful Annual General Meeting

Santa Rosa is a community in the Barima-Waini region of northern Guyana and the village is part of the North West Amerindian District. Santa Rosa's burgeoning archery community welcomes a new addition to its ranks with the establishment of the "Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters" Archery club. Recently affiliated to the governing body, “Archery Guyana”, the club sets its sights on promoting the sport of archery in the region under the adept guidance of Archery Guyana's certified Level 1 coach, Carlos Henry.

Led by a dedicated team, the affiliated Club's executive board comprises individuals deeply committed to fostering a thriving archery culture within Santa Rosa. Mr. Carlos Henry assumes the pivotal role of Chairperson, bringing his expertise and passion for the sport to the forefront. Joining him is Stafon Wilson as Vice Chair, Amanda Daniels as Secretary, Wesley Fredericks as Treasurer, Mathew Adrian as Publicity Officer, Caela Rodrigues and Jannel Da Silva as Record Officers, and Stephan Bacchus as Equipment Officer.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon expressed great delight in the new affiliate club and noted that "With the formation of the Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters, there is now a structured avenue platform for enthusiasts of all skill levels to engage in the exhilarating sport of archery." She went on to commend Carlos Henry, Chairperson of the club stating that "Under the mentorship of National Archery Coach Henry, I am confident Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters Club will be committed to nurturing talent, fostering camaraderie, and promoting sportsmanship within the community."

The “Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters” look forward to welcoming members of all ages and backgrounds to join them in their journey towards excellence in archery. As they embark on this exciting endeavor, the club remains dedicated to upholding the principles of inclusivity, integrity, and respect and to work together with the National Federation, Archery Guyana to continue to promote the sport throughout our beloved country.

After an intense 5-day Olympic Solidarity Coaching Course hosted under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and Archery Guyana, the curtains were drawn.

In order to boost the schools programme and specifically for use in the National Schools programme, all newly certified Coaches were presented by the National Federation, Archery Guyana with a complete Beginner Archery set which comprised a brand-new Easton Recurve Bow, three arrows, a quiver, an arm-guard, a bow-string, a sight pin and finger protector. In addition, they received beginner finger tabs, Junior Cartel Quivers and a pack of Easton 3- arrow rests.

Additionally, Former President of Archery Guyana, National Judge, Level 1 Certified Coach, member of the Disciplinary committee and Chair of the Competitions Committee, Ryan McKinnon commended all for participating and in order to give a boost specifically for the schools programme, the six newly certified Coaches from regions were presented with a Krossen Archery adult guard, an Easton recurve Bow Stringer and Easton bow string wax.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon indicated the continued collaboration will continue with the Ministry of Education and the Schools Archery Programme. She also pointed out that the governing body also enjoys charitable status and as such, all supplies needed can be facilitated through Archery Guyana which said entity is privileged to benefit from discounted prices such as Lancaster Archery and can also facilitate the waiver of all taxes and duty in relation to said purchases.

At the closing ceremony, President of the Guyana Olympic Association, Mr. Godfrey Munroe presented the Certificates issued by the International Olympic Committee for this prestigious Olympic Solidarity Course. He commended the governing body, Archery Guyana for creating pillars to make the Archery programme a success. Mr. Munroe proceeded to charge the participants to continue to be creative and innovative in their training tools and steps.

World Archery Coach Trainer, Ms. Ludys Tejada commended the Federation and the participants for the successful completion of the Course and presented Certificates from the International Federation, World Archery to the successful 21 new Coaches.

The Board of Directors extends thanks again to the Executive Committee of the Guyana Olympic Association, Olympic Solidarity, Unit of Allied Art, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Director of Sport Mr. Steve Ninvalle, National Sports Commission, World Archery, Secretary-General Sergio Font of World Archery Americas, Chief Executive Officer of CBJ Int’l Airport, Mr. Ramesh Ghir and his Protocol Team, Mr. Alvin Wilson and his Team at Bermudez Operations, Massy Distribution (Guy) Inc., Mr. Samuel Arjoon and his Team at the Guyana Beverages Inc., and the Media.
