Archery Guyana affiliates new club: ProArchers Guyana

Archery Guyana successfully concluded its National Youth 18 Metres Championships 2026 on Sunday 12th July, 2026 at the Guyana Police Force SportsClub Ground, Eve Leary, bringing the curtains down on an exciting weekend ofcompetition that showcased the country's emerging generation of archers.

Following Saturday's qualification rounds, the championship culminated yesterday with the highly anticipated elimination and medal matches, where 31 young athletes representing school and private clubs demonstrated exceptional skill, discipline, determination, and sportsmanship.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, delivered the closing remarks during the medal presentation ceremony, congratulating everyathlete for their dedication and courage while encouraging them to continuestriving for excellence both on and off the shooting line.

In her remarks, Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon commended not only the medallists butevery participant, emphasising that every competition provides an opportunityto learn, improve, and grow. She also expressed sincere appreciation to the various affiliated clubs, coaches, parents, volunteers, technical officials,sponsors, and partners whose unwavering commitment continues to strengthen the development of youth archery throughout Guyana.

Curtains Close on Successful National Youth 18 Metres Championships 2026 as Guyana's Young Archers Shine

A total of 31 athletes from various school clubs and private clubs participated in the National Youth 18 Metres Championships 2026, held earlier today with the Qualification rounds, Saturday 11th July , 2026 at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary. 

The championship showcased the growing strength of youth archery in Guyana, with young athletes demonstrating discipline, focus, and determination in a competitive environment.

Archery Guyana extends sincere appreciation to Commissioner of Police Dr. Clifton Hicken and Mr. Colin Boyce, Sports Development Officer for the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Retired Deputy Superintendent, for their invaluable support in facilitating the successful hosting of the event at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club Ground.

Special thanks are also extended to the management and staff of Guyana Beverages Inc. for providing Oasis Water and Altitude drinks, ensuring that athletes, officials, and volunteers remained hydrated throughout the day’s activities.

A highlight of the day was the presence of Honourable Minister Steven Jacobs, Minister within the Ministry of,l Vulture, Youth and Sport who spent time on the ground engaging with the young athletes, learning more about the sport of archery, and offering words of encouragement and inspiration about success, resilience, and learning from failure in sport.

31 Young Archers Compete at the National Youth 18 Metres Championships 2026

Archery Guyana proudly announces the successful participation of its Results Manager, Mr. Saeed Karim, in the Advanced IANSEO Seminar hosted by World Archery Mexico, in collaboration with World Archery Americas, in Tlaxcala, Mexico, from July 20-21, 2026, immediately preceding the Pan American Archery Championships.

The prestigious seminar was conducted by Mr. Matteo Pisani, the inventor and one of the principal founders of the IANSEO results management system, the internationally recognised software used to manage scoring and results at World Archery events, Continental Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games.

The programme brought together results managers from across the Americas, including representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Guyana, with the objective of preparing technical officials to competently manage results at World Ranking Events and other elite international competitions.

During the intensive two-day seminar, participants received advanced instruction on the operation of the IANSEO platform, including demonstrations of its sophisticated features, reviews of core functionality, and practical guidance on international standards for competition results management. Mr. Pisani also shared his extensive experience gained from managing results at Olympic Games, World Championships and other premiere international archery competitions, highlighting the mandatory technical requirements and global best practices expected at both national and international events.

Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Saeed Karim stated: "It was a great pleasure to learn directly from the inventor of IANSEO. I now have a much deeper understanding of the software and how we can continue improving the standard of results management in Guyana. The opportunity to immediately apply what I learned at a world-ranking event made the experience even more valuable."

Following the seminar, Mr. Karim remained in Tlaxcala as a volunteer member of the Results Team for the Pan American Archery Championships, where he gained invaluable practical experience managing live competition results at a World Ranking Event. His dedication and technical competence culminated in his appointment as a scorer for the championship finals, providing him with first-hand experience at one of the highest levels of international competition management.

Archery Guyana Strengthens Technical Capacity Through Advanced IANSEO Seminar in Mexico

Archery Guyana is proud to announce the official affiliation of Al Habibi's Archery Club (A.H.A.), marking another significant milestone in the Federation's continued mission to expand the sport throughout Guyana through strong, well-governed affiliated clubs.

The official handover of the Club's Certificate of Affiliation took place on July 1, 2026 during a modest ceremony, where President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, formally presented the Certificate of Affiliation to Mr. Jaza Percival, President and Head Coach of Al Habibi's Archery Club.

The affiliation follows the Club's successful completion of Archery Guyana's affiliation requirements and signifies its commitment to operating in accordance with the Constitution, policies, technical standards and values of the National Federation and World Archery.

Officially established on 18th May 2025, Al Habibi's Archery Club operates from the Samville Kuru Kururu Masjid, Kuru Kururu, Guyana, with the ability to conduct activities at other locations within the community approved by its Executive Committee. The Club's establishment represents an important expansion of organised archery along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway corridor and will provide greater opportunities for children, youth and adults in surrounding communities to participate in the sport.

The Club will be administered by the following Executive Committee:

President and Head Coach: Mr. Jaza Percival

Vice President: Mr. Shane Arinda

Secretary and Treasurer: Mrs. Lesa Waldron-Percival

These officers will oversee the governance, administration and development of the Club in accordance with its Constitution while working collaboratively with Archery Guyana to deliver programmes that reflect national and international best practices.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, President of Archery Guyana, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, welcomed the Club into the national archery family and emphasised the importance of affiliated clubs in achieving the Federation's long-term vision. "One of Archery Guyana's strategic priorities has always been to build the sport from the ground up by establishing strong, sustainable clubs throughout the country. Every affiliated club creates new opportunities for participation, develops future athletes and volunteers, and strengthens the foundation upon which national success is built. We are therefore delighted to welcome Al Habibi's Archery Club into the Archery Guyana family. Affiliation is much more than receiving a certificate.... it is a commitment to good governance, athlete welfare, safe sport, technical excellence and the values that define our Federation."

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana looks forward to working closely with Mr. Percival and his Executive Committee as they build a vibrant club that will introduce more Guyanese to archery and contribute meaningfully to the continued growth of our sport.

Archery Guyana Welcomes Al Habibi's Archery Club as Newest Affiliated Member

Archery Guyana Inc., the National Archery Federation of Guyana has represented the nation at the sport’s Continental General Assembly of World Archery Americas (WAA) in Tlaxcala, Mexico.

The General Assembly held on Monday 22nd June, 2026 was conducted by the continental organisation in charge of the promotion and development of archery in the Americas. The congress which is made up of 32 member associations along with 2 associate members has notably documented Guyana position in the sport and has acknowledged the country’s rapidly growing influence within the global archery community at this congress. The delegation in attendance were Archery Guyana President Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon and Executive Board Member Assistant Treasurer Mr. Saeed Karim.

The highlight of Guyana's participation was a presentation delivered by President Persaud-McKinnon focused on the South American nation’s position in promoting sport and sport tourism, by hosting the upcoming Inaugural Caribbean Archery Championship and the eight edition of the Caribbean Development Championships, both scheduled to be hosted at the prestigious Guyana National Stadium, Providence Guyana in October 2026.

The presentation generated considerable interest among member associations, with many countries expressing their intention to attend and support the two concurrent Archery Championship events.

Time was allocated for a special video message from the Director of Sport, Mr. Steve Ninvalle, who welcomed delegates to Guyana on behalf of the National Sports Commission, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and the Government of Guyana. The message highlighted the Government’s commitment to sport, future development and regional cooperation within the nations of the Americas, which was warmly received by delegates.

President of World Archery, Mr. Greg Easton, was also in attendance at the congress, joining delegates from across North, Central and South America along with many nations from the Caribbean.

Taking the opportunity to further promote Guyana as a tourism hotspot and sport destination, the Archery Guyana delegation made presentations of promotional packages to members in attendance. Delegates received Explore Guyana magazines, pens, keyrings and samples of Guyanese honey. These items which were presented ensured that every delegation left with a memorable introduction to Guyana's culture, hospitality and tourism offerings.

As part of the main proceedings of the General Assembly, elections and constitutional business were conducted. Mr. Saeed Karim was appointed as one of the three scrutineers responsible for overseeing the processes, ensuring that the validity and values of the WAA Constitution were upheld.

Elections were held and delegates subsequently re-elected Maria Emma Gaviria as President of World Archery Americas. Following her re-election, she announced the appointment of Mr. Sergio Font as Secretary General for the next four-year term.

The election of the Permanent Committees, Guyana’s Persaud-McKinnon secured the highest number of votes amongst candidates for the Gender Equity and Inclusion Committee and was duly elected to serve on that committee. The election of Archery Guyana’s President to this committee reflects the delegation's confidence placed in her leadership and commitment to fostering greater inclusion, participation and opportunity throughout the sport.

Additionally Archery Guyana Board Member, Assistant Secretary Ryan McKinnon was announced to be appointed to serve on the WAA Marketing Committee, strengthening Guyana's representation within the continental organisation.

Reflecting on the experience, President Persaud-McKinnon stated: "Attending my first World Archery Americas General Assembly in person was truly an incredible experience. I was extremely impressed by the professionalism displayed throughout the Congress and grateful for the opportunity to meet so many colleagues from across the continent with whom I had previously only communicated virtually. The Assembly provided an excellent platform for collaboration, learning and relationship-building that will undoubtedly benefit archery development in Guyana and throughout the Caribbean."

She further noted that the overwhelming support shown for Guyana's upcoming hosting of the Archery Championships events demonstrates the confidence that the international archery community has in Guyana's ability to administer and host high-quality competitions and development initiatives.

Archery Guyana extends sincere appreciation to the Guyana Tourism Authority and the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana for their generous support in making the Guyana promotional materials available. Additionally, the Federation also recognises with sincerity and appreciation, the Guyana Olympic Association and its executive for the strong support that is given to the Olympic sport of Archery, ultimately enabling the development of Archery throughout Guyana.

Guyana Promoted As Archery Destination at World Archery Americas Congress in Mexico

Hosted through the combined efforts of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), and the Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana (EFG), the workshop brought administrators, coaches, medical professionals and advocates into one room with a shared mission: ensuring that athletes living with epilepsy are understood, supported and empowered. Archery Guyana on February 20, 2026 proudly participated in this landmark ‘Epilepsy in Sport  Awareness and Management’ workshop.

Representing Archery Guyana at the workshop were Messrs. Courtlee Rodrigues and Nolan Gray, who engaged in the interactive sessions aimed at strengthening knowledge and response protocols surrounding epilepsy in sporting environments.

The initiative marked the first workshop of its kind in Guyana addressing the intersection of epilepsy and sport, aligning with the NSC’s developmental agenda and broader efforts by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports to advance inclusive participation across all disciplines.

Speaking at the workshop,  President Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon in her capacity as Secretary General of the Guyana Olympic Association emphasised the broader responsibility of sporting bodies: “Sport must go beyond medals and podiums and embrace dignity, education, safety, and inclusion. Inclusion is not simply a policy — it is a daily practice reflected in how we coach, organise, and protect our athletes.”

She further highlighted the importance of awareness and preparedness within federations: “With proper awareness, appropriate response protocols, and supportive coaching environments, athletes living with epilepsy can safely and confidently participate in sport. No athlete should be limited by misunderstanding or stigma.”

Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon also extended special recognition to Rawle Toney, as being instrumental in bringing this initiative to life and ensuring the message reached every corner of the sporting community.

The programme opened with a call to action for greater awareness and stronger systems within sport chaired by Dr. Thomas Singh.

Kudos are particularly extended to Director of Sport, Mr. Steve Ninvalle, for creating the opportunity for national federations to benefit from this landmark initiative. In describing the workshop as historic, the first formal alliance between the National Sports Commission and the Epilepsy Foundation, he affirmed that “we’re moving in the right direction,” signaling a progressive shift toward stronger collaboration and athlete-centered development in Guyana’s sporting landscape.

The medical segment of the workshop delivered both depth and clarity. Dr. Mallika Mootoo, MD, Pediatrician, provided critical insight into epilepsy in young athletes, dispelling myths while reinforcing that, with appropriate management, children with epilepsy can safely and confidently participate in sport.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana shared lived realities, advocacy efforts, and the urgent need to break stigma through education.

Neurologists Dr. Alex Persaud, MD, and Dr. Jarrel Watson, MD, delivered an engaging and practical session on seizure recognition, emergency response protocols, and management strategies tailored for sporting environments. Participants left equipped with clear guidance on what to do and what not to do  when responding to seizures on the field of play.

Archery Guyana views this engagement as part of its ongoing commitment to athlete-centered governance and safe sport practices. The federation recognises that inclusive sport strengthens not only individual athletes, but the integrity and resilience of the sporting community as a whole.

Archery Guyana remains dedicated to ensuring that its programmes reflect global best practices in safety, education, and accessibility, reinforcing that archery, like all sport, must be open to all.


Archery Guyana Supports Inclusive Sport at ‘Epilepsy in Sport’ Workshop

Archery Guyana's own Lucas Chung is making an impressive mark at the 2nd qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games, which is currently taking place in Buenos Aires from March 19-23, 2025.

In a remarkable turn of events, Lucas celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday in Argentina, making the occasion even more special by showcasing his archery skills during the official practice session. With precision and focus, he consistently scored 9's and 10's, with a few 8's here and there, showing his steady performance and determination. At the end of the day, he wound up scoring an impressive 56/60 - an excellent result as he continues to push himself toward greater heights.

Lucas' equipment was thoroughly checked, and he had the opportunity to meet and connect with several other delegations after practice, fostering camaraderie and sharing experiences. The event's atmosphere continues to provide Lucas with valuable exposure to international competition.

As of today, Lucas has maintained a strong standing, currently ranked 7th with a score of 106 after 2 ends, just a few points behind the leader who has a score of 110. His performance is a testament to his dedication and skill as he represents Guyana on the world stage.

This qualifier is a significant opportunity for Lucas as he continues his journey in archery, striving for success on the international stage. We wish him the best of luck in the upcoming rounds and I'm coming days as the competition unfolds.

Lucas Chung off to memorable start at 2nd Qualifier for Junior Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Last weekend, July 12–13, 2025, at the Leonora National Track & Field Centre marked a landmark event for Archery Guyana. Under brilliant skies and despite passing showers that added aesthetic drama, 40 dedicated archers competed fiercely across Recurve, Compound, and Barebow divisions. The Championships doubled as both a national ranking event and a marquee audition for future high-performance squads and international representation.

A lot of firsts were achieved for the Federation, for example, for the first time, the Federation hosted the 70m Olympic-standard shooting distances and a Team competition. Together, the high-level officials, Archery Judges, international targets and IANSEO scoring brought an international atmosphere. Day One featured qualification rounds, followed by the Elimination and Medal Finals on Day Two.

For the Opening Day remarks, President of the Federation, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon set the tone, emphasising discipline, sportsmanship, and national pride. She reminded athletes, “Each arrow you shoot is a testament to your dedication… this is the proving ground for excellence.” She also acknowledged sponsors, field crew, judges, and introduced the officials as the Director of Shooting, Mr. Umasankar Madray, and Chairman of Judges, Ryan McKinnon.

Over the weekend, the Athletes proved their mettle in brief showers, showcasing discipline akin to global standards. There was diverse participation: Across men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions, veteran amateurs, developing talents, and beginners delivered performances that reflected Guyana’s growing depth in archery. The Nationals attracted independent archers from across Guyana and representatives from various clubs including QC Archers, The Archery Guild, Pro Archers, Bow Nation and Golden League Archery.
