Qayyim Academy introduced to archery

The elimination rounds of the second Qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games 2025 concluded yesterday, with 24 countries fiercely competing for a coveted spot in Asunción, Paraguay. Among them, Guyana’s Lucas Chung proudly took to the field, representing our country with skill, determination, and sportsmanship.

After a strong start in his match against Jacob Mighty of Jamaica, Chung led 2-0 after the first end. However, despite a tightly contested battle, Mighty ultimately advanced to the next round. The competition continued with eliminations from Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Peru, leading to a thrilling final lineup featuring Bolivia, Venezuela, Cuba, and Ecuador for the championship showdown on Sunday, March 23rd.

Despite the result, Chung remains positive and determined. Reflecting on the experience, he shared:

*"Competing on the world stage and achieving my personal best score of 580 is something I will always cherish. This tournament has been an incredible learning opportunity, and I am grateful for the chance to connect with fellow archers from across the Americas. I look forward to more international competitions and continuing to grow as an athlete."*

Archery Guyana President Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon praised Lucas Chung for his dedication, resilience, and achievement in representing Guyana on the international stage. She acknowledged that while elimination is disappointing, true champions rise after setbacks. She highlighted his 18th birthday milestone, emphasising that this is just the beginning of his journey, and expressed confidence in his continued growth and success.

She also extended heartfelt appreciation to Lucas’s family: Andrew, Christy, and Leianna, for their unwavering support, recognising their sacrifices and role in his achievements. She reassured the Chung Family who are all present in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that Lucas's experience in this competition will only propel him forward, and with their encouragement, his best is yet to come.

Vidushi reaffirmed Archery Guyana's pride in Lucas and commitment to standing by him as he continues his athletic journey.

Despite the loss, Lucas Chung performed admirably against an opponent with significantly more competition experience and the advantage of prior training camp participation. President Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon acknowledged this, emphasising that Lucas still delivered a commendable performance.

She also responded to the wildcard selection update, expressing disappointment but respect for the decision and extending congratulations to Puerto Rico for securing the men’s wildcard spot. She reinforced Archery Guyana’s gratitude for the opportunity to compete at this level and the valuable experience gained.

Finally, she expressed appreciation to the Organisers in Buenos Aires and to World Archery Americas and in particular, Secretary General Mr. Sergio Font for his dedication and efforts in supporting the competition.

Archery Guyana extends its sincere appreciation to the President Munroe and Executive Committee of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for their continuous support of archery and the development of young athletes. Archery Guyana's own Lucas Chung is making an impressive mark at the 2nd qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games, which is currently taking place in Buenos Aires from March 19-23, 2025.

In a remarkable turn of events, Lucas celebrated his 18th birthday yesterday in Argentina, making the occasion even more special by showcasing his archery skills during the official practice session. With precision and focus, he consistently scored 9's and 10's, with a few 8's here and there, showing his steady performance and determination. At the end of the day, he wound up scoring an impressive 56/60 - an excellent result as he continues to push himself toward greater heights.

Lucas' equipment was thoroughly checked, and he had the opportunity to meet and connect with several other delegations after practice, fostering camaraderie and sharing experiences. The event's atmosphere continues to provide Lucas with valuable exposure to international competition.

As of today, Lucas has maintained a strong standing, currently ranked 7th with a score of 106 after 2 ends, just a few points behind the leader who has a score of 110. His performance is a testament to his dedication and skill as he represents Guyana on the world stage.

This qualifier is a significant opportunity for Lucas as he continues his journey in archery, striving for success on the international stage. We wish him the best of luck in the upcoming rounds and I'm coming days as the competition unfolds.

Lucas Chung to Compete in 2nd Qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games in Buenos Aires

President of Archery Guyana, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, has commended the Government of Guyana for its groundbreaking $8 billion allocation to the sports sector in the 2025 National Budget. The announcement, made by Senior Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Honourable Dr. Ashni Singh, represents an extraordinary 42.5% increase from last year’s allocation, a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to the holistic development of sports in Guyana.

“This historic investment is a clear indication of the government’s vision to transform the sporting landscape in our country,” stated Persaud-McKinnon. “We are deeply inspired by the Honourable Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., and his relentless drive to enhance sports infrastructure and opportunities. Equally, we extend immense gratitude to Director of Sport, Mr. Steve Ninvalle, whose expertise, dedication, and tremendous work have been instrumental in shaping the national sports agenda and fostering collaboration across disciplines.”

Acknowledging Mr. Ninvalle’s exceptional leadership, Persaud-McKinnon emphasised his pivotal role in advancing sports development. “Mr. Ninvalle’s commitment to building a modern sports culture has yielded tangible results, including greater access to resources, stronger partnerships, and a clear pathway for athletes to excel. His hands-on approach and vision have been nothing short of transformative, and we are proud to work alongside such a dedicated leader.”

As part of this transformative journey, Archery Guyana wishes to advocate for a permanent home for archery. The Federation is earnestly advocating for the establishment of a dedicated facility for archery. “A specialised dedicated ground and home that accommodates the standard Olympic distance of 70 meters is essential for the growth and development of our sport,” Persaud-McKinnon stated. “Such a facility will not only provide our athletes with a permanent space to train and prepare for international competition but will also serve as a hub for introducing archery, developing young talent and hosting regional and international events. With the government’s support, we are confident this dream can soon become a reality.”

Reflecting on the progress of archery in Guyana, Persaud-McKinnon expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities presented by the increased allocation. “This historic funding allows us to expand archery’s reach, enhance training programmes, strengthen grassroot initiatives and aim to secure equipment and facilities to ensure athletes are equipped to compete at the highest levels. Archery Guyana is thrilled to announce plans to bid to host the prestigious Caribbean Development Championships (CDC) next year, a milestone event that will highlight Guyana’s capacity to host regional tournaments while inspiring our athletes and strengthening our ties with neighbouring nations. This event will not only showcase Guyana as a premiere destination for international tournaments but also inspire a new generation of athletes.”

She further noted, “This is an exciting time for sports in Guyana, and Archery Guyana is committed to playing a significant role in this transformative journey. The government’s visionary investment and working with Federations will pave the way for the sustainable growth of all disciplines, including archery.”

Persaud-McKinnon concluded by reaffirming Archery Guyana’s dedication to national sports development. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and collaboration. With the tremendous support of our Government, we are confident that sports, and in particular, archery in Guyana will reach unprecedented heights. The Essequibo Archers Club indicated that they are very proud with its newest triumph: an official affiliation with Archery Guyana. This exciting affiliation marks a significant milestone in the club's journey and promises to elevate the sport of archery in the region to new heights.

Under the visionary leadership of President Wazeeda Bacchus, the Essequibo Archers Club has emerged as a beacon of dedication and excellence in the archery community. Now, with the backing of Archery Guyana, the club is poised to make an even greater impact, both locally and nationally. Essequibo Archers Club Hits the Bullseye with Archery Guyana Affiliation

The Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) on November 19, 2024, proudly launched Arjuna’s Archery Club on its school compound, marking a momentous step in the promotion of archery as a sport in Guyana. Named after the legendary archer Arjuna from the Mahabharata, the club embodies the values of focus, determination, discipline, and precision.

The idea for the club gained momentum following a fruitful coaching session on Sunday, facilitated by Archery Guyana’s Head Coach and Secretary-General, Nicholas Hing, alongside Coach Kenrick Cheeks and the club’s committee members. This collaboration inspired the formal inauguration of the club during a small ceremony held in the school’s auditorium.

The launch was attended by key figures in the archery community, including Archery Guyana’s Secretary-General and Head Coach Nicholas Hing, SVN’s Physical Education Teacher and Archery Coach Kenrick Cheeks, and members of the club’s executive committee.

In his address, delivered on behalf of Archery Guyana President Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, Mr. Hing expressed the Federation's pride in this significant milestone:

"The decision to name this club Arjuna is both meaningful and inspiring. Arjuna represents virtues that are essential not only in archery but also in life—focus, determination, and precision. This launch demonstrates SVN’s commitment to holistic education, blending academics with extracurricular activities that foster character, confidence, and teamwork."

Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon further emphasised Archery Guyana’s commitment to supporting new club formations and nurturing talent that will represent Guyana with pride on the international stage.

During the event, Mr. Hing also spoke about archery’s inclusivity, highlighting its appeal to all ages and abilities and encouraged other school clubs to also become affiliated to the National Federation. 

The ceremony concluded with a group photo to commemorate the occasion, capturing the spirit of unity and enthusiasm among students, teachers, and coaches.
