Scores of Archers shoot for Gold at Archery Guyana’s 2025 National Indoor Championships.

While heavy rainstorms enveloped Guyana last weekend, it made for ideal environment for indoor archery, as proven over the weekend when Archery Guyana successfully hosted the 2025 National Indoor Archery Championships at the Sophia Exhibition Centre. The Federation motivated some 43 archers and their support personnel from across Guyana to brave the weather and come out to give an impressive display of precision, discipline, competitive excellence and mental fortitude in high level competition.

The two-day championship showcased the nation’s expanding talent pool across archery disciplines of recurve, compound, and barebow divisions. On Saturday morning Archery Athletes left their homes amongst the croaking of frogs and persistent pitter patter of raindrops making damp journey to compete in qualification rounds in the sport they love. Sunday was a similar in nature before the start of elimination matches and finals. Results of these championships contribute to national rankings and data collection to be used for national team consideration and historical records, reinforcing the importance within the local archery calendar of these ranking events.

Archery Guyana commends the commitment and resilience of the Organising Committee, athletes, coaches, officials, and families who ensured the event proceeded successfully despite challenging weather conditions.

With almost 50 participants registered, several high-level performances were seen together with increasing youth engagement. The 2025 National Indoor Championships represent another important milestone in the continued growth and development of archery in Guyana and attracted participation from various clubs such as Bow Nation, Golden League Archery, Pro Archers Guyana, Qayyim Archery and independent archers.

The tournament was officiated by National Archery Judges, Ryan McKinnon in the capacity of Director of Shooting, whose leadership ensured safe, smooth and efficient competition operations. Line and Target judging duties were carried out by Judges Afzal Karim and Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon. Judges ensure rules are abided by while upholding the standards and integrity of the sport. Technical scoring operations were managed by Results Manager Saeed Karim, with verification support provided by Anoopa Ramdial, ensuring accurate scoring and timely results throughout the championship.

Special appreciation were extended to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Roger Rogers, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, and Ms. Chester and the staff of the Sophia Exhibition Centre for their support.

Archery Guyana also extends sincere appreciation to Guyana Beverages Inc. for its generous sponsorship through the provision of Oasis Water and Altitude sports drinks, helping athletes remain hydrated and perform at their best throughout the competition.


Archers Shine Despite Heavy Rain at National Indoor Championships 2025

Archery Guyana Inc. successfully concluded Part II of its Wellness and Nutrition Seminar on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, bringing together athletes, coaches, and club representatives from across the archery community for another dynamic and engaging morning focused on athlete well-being and high-performance preparation.

The part 2 seminar formed part of the Federation’s continuing effort to strengthen the holistic development of its athletes, highlighting the importance of proper nutrition, injury prevention, physical conditioning, and recovery as essential components of elite sporting performance.

Archery Guyana extended sincere appreciation to Dr. Ariane Mangar, Director of Rehabilitation, and the Guyana Physiotherapists Association for their collaboration and support in delivering the programme. The Federation also expressed gratitude to workshop facilitators Ms. Vanessa Wickham and Ms. Aretha Legall, whose practical presentations and interactive discussions provided athletes with valuable insights into maintaining optimal physical health and performance readiness.

Participants explored topics ranging from physical conditioning and injury management to the role of nutrition and recovery in sustaining high-level performance. The sessions emphasised that modern competitive archery requires far more than technical skill.... it demands a structured and disciplined approach to overall athlete wellness.

Speaking during the Seminar, Archery Guyana’s Head Coach Ryan McKinnon emphasised that meaningful improvement in archery is not achieved simply by increasing the number of arrows shot during practice. Instead, athletes must focus on intentional training, combining technical practice with physical care, conditioning, and mental discipline in order to consistently execute the precise technique required in competitive archery.

An important initiative also emerged from discussions during the seminar. National Federation President Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon announced that Archery Guyana is currently working with Dr. Ariane Mangar and the Ministry of Health to organise a vision screening opportunity for archers.

Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon opined that given that archery relies heavily on accurate vision, focus, and depth perception, the Federation is exploring arrangements for a Saturday morning screening session where athletes will be able to receive basic eye examinations. For archers who may require corrective lenses, there may also be access to vouchers through a Ministry programme to assist with obtaining glasses.

Clubs have been asked to submit the names and contact information of interested archers so that numbers can be compiled and arrangements finalised in collaboration with the Ministry.

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana also expressed appreciation to its corporate partners who supported the event. Thanks were extended to the Massy Distribution Guyana Inc. for providing Soldanza snacks and healthy Nature Valley Oats 'n Honey granola bars for participants, and to Guyana Beverages Inc. for supplying Oasis Water and Altitude, helping to keep athletes refreshed throughout the session. Thanks were also expressed to Director of Sport Mr. Steve Ninvalle and the National Sports Commission for use of the Facility.

The seminar concluded with group photographs featuring participants from the various clubs represented, reflecting the strong sense of community and shared commitment to raising the standard of archery in Guyana.

The Wellness and Nutrition Seminar forms part of Archery Guyana’s broader strategy to develop well-rounded athletes capable of competing successfully at regional and international levels.

Through initiatives such as education workshops, athlete health programmes, and collaboration with professional partners in sports medicine and rehabilitation, the Federation continues to reinforce the message that elite performance begins with athlete health, discipline, and preparation.

As the Federation continues to expand its development programmes, Archery Guyana remains committed to ensuring that its athletes are supported not only technically, but also physically and mentally, as they pursue excellence in the sport.


Archery Guyana continues to strengthen Athlete Development Through Part II Wellness and Nutrition Seminar

Archery Guyana is proud to announce its participation in the IV South American Youth Games Panama 2026, where two promising young athletes will represent the Golden Arrowhead in the sport of archery.

Guyana will be represented by Brandon Cummings in the Individual Recurve category and Ravish Singh in the Individual Compound category. Both athletes have been engaged in an intensive training programme under the guidance of World Archery Level 2 Certified Coach Ryan McKinnon, who will accompany the athletes to Panama to provide technical support and mentorship throughout the Games.

The archery competition is scheduled for April 15–18, 2026, and will be held at the Estadio de Tiro con Arco at the Ciudad Deportiva Irving Saladino in Panama City. 

The Games are expected to bring together more than 1,500 athletes from 15 National Olympic Committees of the Organización Deportiva Suramericana (ODESUR), representing countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Suriname, and host nation Panama, among others.  These Games serve as a major multi-sport platform for the region’s emerging athletes and promote excellence, friendship, and the Olympic spirit.

In preparation for the event, Cummings and Singh have been undertaking focused training sessions aimed at sharpening their technical execution, mental focus, and competition readiness. Their preparation reflects Archery Guyana’s continued commitment to developing athletes capable of competing at the highest regional and international levels.

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana also wishes to express its sincere appreciation to President Godfrey Munroe and the Executive Committee of the Guyana Olympic Association for their support in facilitating the country’s participation in these Games. The Association looks forward to travelling alongside the other disciplines that will represent Guyana and proudly showcasing the nation’s talent on the international stage.

Logistical preparations for the delegation are currently being coordinated with Chef-de-Mission Ms. Carolyn Garraway, as final arrangements are made to ensure the athletes are well supported throughout the competition.

Archery Guyana gets set for IV South American Youth Games in Panama

Guyana will be represented by three archers at the upcoming Grand Prix of the Americas, Stage I – Second Qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, scheduled for 15–19 April 2026 in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.

The Guyanese contingent will comprise Devin Persaud Permaul, Wayne DeAbreu, and Roshini Boodhoo, who will compete against top archers from across the Americas in one of the region’s most significant international archery competitions.

The event, organised under the auspices of World Archery and the Salvadoran Archery Federation, will take place at the Jardines de La Sabana Sports Complex in Santa Tecla, a venue that has previously hosted major regional championships. The tournament serves not only as a World Ranking Event (WRE) but also as an important qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean Games, giving athletes the opportunity to earn valuable ranking points and secure qualification opportunities.

Competition will begin with official practice, equipment inspection, and the team managers’ meeting, followed by qualification rounds and elimination matches across several categories. The programme culminates with individual, team, and mixed team medal matches.

The Guyanese team will also be entering the mixed team event, marking an important milestone in the development of the country’s competitive archery programme.

Team member Devin Persaud Permaul expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, noting: “I’m excited to enter for the first time as a mixed team. It’s one step forward in our team progression.”

Meanwhile, Roshini Boodhoo highlighted the motivation that comes from competing alongside experienced national teammates as she continues her preparation. “I’m elated to meet up with fellow Guyanese archers who are no strangers on the international scene, which adds motivation as I prepare through one-on-one training sessions with Coach Lula,” she said.

Archery Guyana views participation in this prestigious tournament as an important step in the continued development of the sport locally. Competing on the international stage provides invaluable experience for Guyanese athletes while strengthening the country’s presence on the international stage.

The three athletes who will be representing Guyana have demonstrated commitment and steady progress within the national programme. Their participation reflects Archery Guyana’s ongoing efforts to expose local athletes to higher levels of competition and to build a strong pipeline of talent capable of competing at regional and international events.

Santa Tecla, located in the department of La Libertad in El Salvador, is known for its modern sporting infrastructure and experience hosting international archery competitions.

Guyana to Compete at Grand Prix of the Americas Archery Tournament in El Salvador

On this International Women’s Day 2026, under the powerful theme “When we give, we gain,” the Women in Sport Committee of Archery Guyana proudly celebrates the strength, resilience and generosity of the women and girls who shape our sport and our nation.

Formed on 14 January 2026, the Women in Sport Committee was established to advance, support and promote the participation, safeguarding and leadership of women and girls in archery, in keeping with the policies, objectives and values of Archery Guyana. Though newly formed, our purpose is bold and clear: to create an environment where every female archer and contributor feels empowered, valued and inspired to excel.

This year’s theme reminds us that when women give their time, talent, mentorship and courage to sport, we all gain, stronger athletes, stronger families, stronger communities and a stronger federation. Everytime a female picks up a bow and draws her arrow, she is discovering her potential, words of encouragement shared between teammates, and all of the time volunteered behind the scenes to make this time possible, reflects this truth.

In the interest of strengthening women’s participation, interests and wellness, the Committee is proud to spotlight for International Women’s Day 2026, the voices of girls and women within our archery community. Based on their experiences, their advice serves as a beacon to other females: there is a place for you here. Whether you aspire to compete, coach, officiate, administer, or support from the sidelines, archery offers discipline, confidence, sisterhood and opportunity.

Under the stewardship of a strong and confident leader, Archery Guyana’s President, Ms. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, the Committee will soon undertake a comprehensive survey of all females involved in the sport, whether they are athletes, coaches, administrators or actively engaged family members. This initiative aims to better understand the experiences and challenges faced by women and girls in archery, and to use those insights to create meaningful opportunities, informed policies and supportive pathways for growth.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2026, we affirm our commitment to building a culture of respect, equity and excellence in archery. The Women in Sport Committee looks forward to implementing impactful initiatives throughout the year, this is only the beginning.

International Women’s Day 2026 Message, Women in Sport Committee,  Archery Guyana

The elimination rounds of the second Qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games 2025 concluded yesterday, with 24 countries fiercely competing for a coveted spot in Asunción, Paraguay. Among them, Guyana’s Lucas Chung proudly took to the field, representing our country with skill, determination, and sportsmanship.

After a strong start in his match against Jacob Mighty of Jamaica, Chung led 2-0 after the first end. However, despite a tightly contested battle, Mighty ultimately advanced to the next round. The competition continued with eliminations from Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Peru, leading to a thrilling final lineup featuring Bolivia, Venezuela, Cuba, and Ecuador for the championship showdown on Sunday, March 23rd.

Despite the result, Chung remains positive and determined. Reflecting on the experience, he shared:

*"Competing on the world stage and achieving my personal best score of 580 is something I will always cherish. This tournament has been an incredible learning opportunity, and I am grateful for the chance to connect with fellow archers from across the Americas. I look forward to more international competitions and continuing to grow as an athlete."*

Archery Guyana President Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon praised Lucas Chung for his dedication, resilience, and achievement in representing Guyana on the international stage. She acknowledged that while elimination is disappointing, true champions rise after setbacks. She highlighted his 18th birthday milestone, emphasising that this is just the beginning of his journey, and expressed confidence in his continued growth and success.

She also extended heartfelt appreciation to Lucas’s family: Andrew, Christy, and Leianna, for their unwavering support, recognising their sacrifices and role in his achievements. She reassured the Chung Family who are all present in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that Lucas's experience in this competition will only propel him forward, and with their encouragement, his best is yet to come.

Vidushi reaffirmed Archery Guyana's pride in Lucas and commitment to standing by him as he continues his athletic journey.

Despite the loss, Lucas Chung performed admirably against an opponent with significantly more competition experience and the advantage of prior training camp participation. President Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon acknowledged this, emphasising that Lucas still delivered a commendable performance.

She also responded to the wildcard selection update, expressing disappointment but respect for the decision and extending congratulations to Puerto Rico for securing the men’s wildcard spot. She reinforced Archery Guyana’s gratitude for the opportunity to compete at this level and the valuable experience gained.

Finally, she expressed appreciation to the Organisers in Buenos Aires and to World Archery Americas and in particular, Secretary General Mr. Sergio Font for his dedication and efforts in supporting the competition.

Archery Guyana extends its sincere appreciation to the President Munroe and Executive Committee of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for their continuous support of archery and the development of young athletes. Their commitment to sport and athlete development has played a crucial role in providing opportunities like these for Guyana’s representatives to shine on the international stage.

As Lucas Chung returns home, his journey continues, fuelled by experience, resilience, and the support of his family, federation, and country. Archery Guyana stands firmly behind him, ready for the next steps ahead.

Republic Day stands as a powerful reminder of our sovereignty, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Guyanese people. It is a celebration of national pride, unity in diversity, and our collective commitment to building a stronger, more equitable nation. As a national sporting federation, Archery Guyana remains deeply aligned with these ideals, recognising sport as a vital instrument of nation-building, youth empowerment, and social transformation.

As we honour our Republic, we also reaffirm our responsibility to contribute meaningfully to Guyana’s development through structured programming, inclusive leadership, and excellence in sport.

In keeping with the national theme of empowerment and advancement, we take this opportunity to let you all know that Archery Guyana’s Women in Sport Commission has launched a special spotlight initiative in the lead-up to International Women’s Day 2026.

Nominees from across the federation, including women archers, coaches, club members, committee members and administrators, have been invited to share short personal quotes or advice aimed at inspiring young women and girls interested in archery and sport leadership. These features will be released progressively in the days leading up to International Women’s Day starting March 1st.

This initiative reflects not only a celebration of women in sport, but a broader commitment to strengthening leadership, representation, and opportunity within our Republic. The campaign highlights the resilience, discipline, and growing impact of women who are shaping the future of archery in Guyana.

As part of its structured approach to growth and inclusion, Archery Guyana will also launch a comprehensive survey targeting female archers, coaches, and administrators. The survey will gather insights into their experiences, challenges, and opportunities within the sport.

The findings will inform policy direction, strengthen programming, and enhance the overall environment for women within the Federation. This initiative underscores our commitment to evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development in alignment with national progress.

Additionally, as part of its upcoming activities, Archery Guyana will host Part Two of its Nutrition and Wellness Seminar on Saturday, 7th March 2026, in collaboration with the Guyana Physiotherapy Association and the Ministry of Health.

This partnership reflects the Federation’s holistic approach to athlete development emphasising physical health, education, injury prevention, and long-term well-being. Such collaborations demonstrate how sport, health, and national institutions can work together in advancing the welfare of our citizens.

As President of Archery Guyana, I take this opportunity to reaffirm the Board’s steadfast commitment to advancing gender equity, strengthening leadership pathways, and fostering an inclusive sporting environment where every athlete and administrator can thrive.

On this 56th Republic Anniversary, we renew our pledge to serve Guyana with integrity, excellence, and patriotic pride. May our continued efforts in sport contribute to a stronger, healthier, and more united Republic.

President of Archery Guyana, Ms. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, expressed her elation at this recent affiliation, emphasising the shared commitment to fostering the growth and development of archery across Guyana. The affiliation comes hot on the heels of successful training initiatives in Essequibo, demonstrating the region's burgeoning passion for the sport. Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon went on to commend the rapid growth of archery in Essequibo, fueled by the recent successful training of archery instructors in collaboration with the National Sports Commission. 

The Essequibo Archers Club indicated that they are very proud with its newest triumph: an official affiliation with Archery Guyana. This exciting affiliation marks a significant milestone in the club's journey and promises to elevate the sport of archery in the region to new heights.

Under the visionary leadership of President Wazeeda Bacchus, the Essequibo Archers Club has emerged as a beacon of dedication and excellence in the archery community. Now, with the backing of Archery Guyana, the club is poised to make an even greater impact, both locally and nationally.
