Today marks an important day ... The official opening of the Pan American Games.

World Archery America's Gender Equity Committee wishes all participants in the upcoming Pan American Games 2023 all the best.

President of World Archery Americas Ms. Maria Emma Gavira met with Chair of WAA Gender Equity Committee Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon and WAA Gender Equity Member Mr. César Otárola in Santiago, Chile. It was expressed that the records will be updated after the Games and it is hoped that the medallists percentage rises.

We have come a far way to ensure gender equality and we are undoubtedly in a better position today than decades before but there is still considerable work and advocacy to be done.

World Archery America's Gender Equity Committee wishes all participants in the upcoming Pan American Games 2023 all the best

Nicholas Hing and Robert Singh have been officially welcomed into the Continental Judges fraternity by World Archery Americas after having successfully completed the World Archery Americas Continental Judges Seminar hosted in Tobago in early October 2023.

This Seminar is the first ever WAA Judges seminar held in the region. This initiative is part of the WorldArchery Americas’ strategic development plan to train more Continental Judges in more countries. This will result in more regional Continental Judges being available for events at the Central American and Caribbean Games and Pan Am games.

The seminar was held in Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago and was conducted by International Judge Liz Del Carmen Perez Ortiz (Mex) and Continental Judge Kristy Wapniarski (USA), Participants were National Judges, with over 2 years’ experience, from the host country and Guyana.

The seminar included classroom and field sessions and closed with a written exam that required an 85% pass mark. The National Judges were also given international exposure by being part of the judges team, led by International Judge Liz Perez, that officiated at the recently held 5th Caribbean Development Championships.

Nicholas Hing’s and Robert Singh’s achievements bring the number of Guyanese Continental Judges to three (3) as Mohamed Gamal Khan was certified in May 2022 after attending a seminar held in Nova Scotia, Canada.

It was a fun-filled and energetic closing of the 5th Caribbean Development Competition which was hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Archery Federation under the auspices of World Archery Americas in September 2023.

The successful competition which saw 176 archers from 11 countries participating, was held over the weekend in capital Scarborough, Tobago at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Trinidad and Tobago, following closely on the heels of the Continental Judges Seminar.

The Guyana team conducted themselves excellently with a lot of first-time overseas participants, of which the National Federation, its Continental Judges and National Coach are very proud. Although everyone didn’t medal in the respective categories and divisions, they all came away with much more than they would have expected experiencing for the first time how a World Archery international event is organized and executed.

The official practice day (Friday 28th) began with the coaches overseeing the athletes in preparation for the following day’s competition.

Saturday’s Ranking Rounds were shot off by all 11 countries’ teams with athletes vying for their highest possible ranking scores to move onto the elimination and finals matches. In the Recurve Beginner Senior Men Category the highest ranking score after 72 arrows went to the Guyana’s Jeewanram Persaud 608 with Naresh Sukhu placing 7th with 383.

In the Recurve Senior Women Category Roshini Boodhoo came in first place with a high score of 539, followed by 3rd place Julie Ann Williams’ 513, Theresa Deoroop’s 330 - 9th, Bibi Salim’s 244 - 10th and Karin Toppin’s 222 - 11th. 
In the Barebow Beginner Men, Teemahall Lall came in 2nd with a total score 629 to Barbadian Cole Gill’s 651. Scoring 4th was Richard Dookie with 586, 6th was Courtlee Rodrigues with 536 and 10th was Rasheed Alim with 487.

For the Recurve Beginner U21 Men, Saeed Karim came in 2nd to Jared Nichols of St Vincent and the Grenadines with scores of 570 to 577 respectively.

For the Barebow Beginner U18 Women, Nataliya Pollard placed 3rd with 205 in her category.

In the Exceptional Beginner Recurve Women Victoria Kum scored a total of 472 over her competition to gain the top spot in her category. An impressive personal best for her since she has been shooting.
In the Recurve Developmental Senior Men Umasankar Madray placed 9th while Samira Duncan in the Recurve Developmental Senior Women placed 4th.

For the Mixed Teams Guyana’s Roshini Boodhoo and Jeewanram Persaud teamed to place 1st, while the team of Barbados & Trinidad came in 2nd, British Virgin Islands & St Vincent & the Grenadines place 3rd, Curacao and Guyana’s Jair Davelaar and Julie Ann Williams 4th, St Vincent & the Grenadines 5th and lac
Guyana’s Barebow Beginner Mixed Team of Teemahall Lall & Nataliya Pollard placed 4th behind Trinidad & Tobago’s 1st, Barbados and Curacao’s 2nd and Jamaica and T&T’s 3rd. Our Mixed Recurve Developmental Team came in 4th behind T&T’s 1st place, Barbados’ 2nd and Jamaica’s 3rd, but over 4th place Curacao & Dominican Republic.

The Recurve Beginner U21 Mixed Team of Guyana & Trinidad saw Saeed Karim of Guyana and Aria Batchasingh of Trinidad place 2nd over Jamaica’s 3rd as St Vincent & the Grenadines came in 1st place.

The Elimination and Final matches were held on Sunday as the athletes gave their best performances for the medals. In the Gold Medal matches Persaud beat Jair Davelaar of Curacao 6-0, while Roshini Boodhoo beat Suzanne Sukram of Trinidad 7-3. Saeed Karim took Gold from Jared Nichols of St Vincent for 6-2. In her category, Victoria Kum got a bye thru to finals and beat Anandita Sameera Singh of Trinidad 6-2. In his category Teemahall Lall took silver as Barbadian Cole Gill took the gold 6-2. Nataliya Pollard took bronze in her U15 category, and in the teams Boodhoo and Persaud were given a bye thru to semi-final where they shot their way to the gold over Calida Charles & Adam Tryhane of Team Barbados & Trinidad 6-0. And in his U21 category Saeed Karim teamed up with Trinidadian Aria Batchasingh to win silver against St Vincent’s Divya Jiandani & Jared Nichols 6-4.

Archery Guyana will be hosting its STERLING PRODUCTS sponsored National Outdoor Championships 2023 shortly with Ranking rounds to be on Saturday 19th August, 2023 and theFinals on Sunday 20th August, 2023 at the Queen’s College Playfield, Camp Street and Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

Guyana’s best local talents will be on display aiming for the bragging right of best Outdoor Archer. Here Archers will have to demonstrate great discipline, strength and stamina to walk away with the title.

Recently, at the handover ceremony at Sterling Products’ Head-office at Providence, East Bank Demerara, President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon and Archery Guyana’s Treasurer, Mr. Robert Singh were able to learn more about the products from the knowledgeable staff. National Sterling Products’ Outdoor Archery Championships a success
Archery Guyana’s National Outdoor Championships 2023, sponsored by Sterling Products Limited and Oasis Water, were recently held on Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20 at the Queen's College Playfield, Thomas Lands, Georgetown. 
A total of 30 archers participated, 21 men and 9 women. Shooting off on Saturday 19, the qualification rounds were literally hotly contested in both Recurve and Barebow categories in the blistering heat. The National Judges for the competition were DOS (Director of Shooting) Mr. Ryan McKinnon and Line/Target Judge Mr. Robert Singh.

## BAREBOW

In the Barebow Men Jeewanram Persaud narrowly topped off the list with 601 points while Mehandra Chatargum came in a close 600 and Ryan Chichester at 509 for 3rd place. following up on points were Muhammad Zamaluddin 499, Vishal Manbode 452, Faraad Gani 394, Richard Dookie 358, Courtlee Rodrigues 322, Jaza Percival 305 and Afzal Karim 297.
In the U18 Barebow Men, Saifullah Gani scored highest (548) to beat Muhsin Wazidali’s 273 and Christian Craigen’s 119. They were only three Under 18 men to contest the category.

In the Barebow Women’s category Roshini Boodhoo topped with 422 as Melesa Ramnaraine scored 351, Julie-Ann Williams 259, followed by Fatima Ameera Gani 211 and Karin Toppin 191

## RECURVE
7 men contested the Recurve ranking round, and again it was Persaud that came out on top. He scored 647 ahead of Chatargum’s 606. Saeed Karim came in 3rd with 571, followed by Vishal Manbode 489, Jaza Percival 488, Naresh Sukhu 444 and Faraad Gani 415.
In the Women’s category Roshini Boodhoo again beat all her opponents to score 439 over Julie-Ann Williams’ 388, Samira Duncan’s 382 and Karin Toppin’s 212.

## FINALS
The Semi-Finals and Finals were held on Sunday 20th August as the archers fought to medal in their respective categories. The Barebow Men’s Final saw Mehandra Chatargum earn the top spot for Gold over Jeewanram Perdaud’s Silver and Faraad Gani’s Bronze.

In the U18 Barebow Men’s Final Saifullah Gani copped the Gold as Muhsin Wazidali took silver and Christian Craigen took bronze.

The Men’s Recurve saw Persaud take Gold, with Karim taking silver and Chatargum, bronze. And in the Women’s Recurve Boodhoo took home the gold as Duncan and Williams settled for Silver and Bronze respectively.

At the presentation ceremony, Remarks were delivered by Marketing Manager, Mr. Dellon Lynch of Sterling Products who indicated he was impressed at the high level of Archery he witnessed and presented the medalists with a tub of Igloo icecream each. He also went on to indicate that his company would be delighted to see their sponsored event on the yearly calendar and looks forward to next year.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon conveyed thanks to the hard-working Committee, the Judges and extended special thanks to Chief Executive officer, Mr. Ramsay Ali, Marketing Manager Mr. Dellon Lynch and the Management of Sterling Products. She went on to commend the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Queen’s College, Mr. Marcel Gaskin for use of the facility. Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon remarked on the ideal location of the playfield and gave honourable mention of Ms. Rhonda Ogle and Mr. Nardeo Persaud in ensuring access to the ground was an ease.

National Sterling Products’ Outdoor Archery Championships a success

Archery Guyana recently held its Inaugural Youth championship at the National Gymnasium
which was deemed a success. The youths exceeded all expectations and won the hearts of the
audience.

The ranking rounds were a resounding success with the highest score being 395 held by Saifullah
Gani from ProArchers Guyana in the men’s category. The women were not far behind, Saifullah’s sister,10 years old Fatima Gani, held a score of 301, also from ProArchers Guyana.
The match play events began in the Barebow Division with the finalists in their respective
categories; Men U18, Women U18. In Men U18, Saifullah Gani captured the gold against Daniel
Elliot of Qayyim Archery who received silver, and Muhsin Wazidali also of Qayyim won
bronze.

In the Women U18, Fatima Gani won Gold in a nail-biting 1 arrow shoot off against
Summayyah Karim of Qayyim Archery, who won silver and Stephanie McTurk of Nations
Archery Club copped the bronze medal.

At the presentation ceremony after the event, President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi
Persaud-McKinnon thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Minister Charles
Ramson, the National Sports Commission and Director of Sport, Mr. Steve Ninvalle, for their
usual kind support of the sport, as well as the beverage sponsor Guyana Beverages Inc. for their
tremendous support.

President of Archery Guyana also went on to thank the Judges for their efficiency and
professionalism throughout the competition: Messrs. Ryan McKinnon and Robert Singh. She
also extended thanks to the Chair of the Tech Committee, Mr. Saeed Karim.

President Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon announced the results and together with the Chair of
Competitions Committee, Mr. Jeewanram Persaud and Vice-chair of Competitions Committee
Mr. Umasankar Madray, presented the medals. Participation medals were also presented to each
and every participant.

Archery Guyana’s INAUGURAL Youth Championship a Success

Guyana's sole representative Robert Singh at the Barbados Senior Games 2023 won 2 bronzes in the sport of Archery. The 2023 Barbados National Senior Games Archery competition was held over the weekend at the World Archery Barbados (WAB) Archery Facility, Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, St. Michael Barbados on Saturday 24th June, and Sunday 25th June 2023.

Robert Singh, representing Archery Guyana competed in the recurve bow age category of 55- 59 years old males and in an impromptu intercountry competition.

The Barbados National Senior Games was first held in 2002. The concept of the games is to promote “Active Ageing”, and improved healthy lifestyles ultimately leading to an improved quality of life and longevity among the Barbadian population. 

The Archery competition encompasses three of the traditional archery bow styles with modifications in distances shot and was held in accordance with the current rules and regulations of World Archery (WA)

The competition was also attended by a Trinidadian team. 

The competiton format was the “900” American round which was shot each day as follows: 
1. 30 arrows from 60 yards – five ends of 6 arrows
2. 30 arrows from 50 yards – five ends of 6 arrows
3. 30 arrows from 40 yards – five ends of 6 arrows

The maximum time permitted for an archer to shoot an end of six arrows is four minutes.

Robert Singh as a matter of note had never competed at those distances previously.

Robert Singh’s category results were:
- Robert Singh (Guy) Bronze
- Andre Gopee (TT) Silver
- Kurt Meyer (TT) Gold

Archery Guyana represented at the Barbados Senior Games 2023

The students and teachers of the Saraswati Vidya Niketan were on Monday, May 8, 2023 treated to an exciting introduction to the sport of archery, by Archery Guyana. National Head Coach Nicholas Hing and Chair of the Tech Committee Saeed Karim, visited the school to give demonstrations and have the excited students (and teachers) try out the sport themselves.

Initial discussions had been held between the Principal Swami Aksharananda and Mr Hing on introducing the archery to the school in its ongoing National Development Program, in which Swamiji wholeheartedly agreed to have the sport introduced to the school.

At the gathering, the students were informed of the school forming the next school club for developing archers from the grassroots to be able eventually represent compete locally, regionally or internationally, with the ultimate goal of representing Guyana on the Olympic stage.

![Wayne DeAbreu and Devin Persaud Permaul will be participating in the IX Copa Merengue, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on April 11-15, 2023](/images/uploads/archery-guyana-archers-copa-merengue.jpg)

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana recently announced very exciting news for the Organization, which will see two of their members, namely Wayne DeAbreu and Devin Persaud Permaul who will be participating in the IX Copa Merengue, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on April 11-15, 2023.

The Copa Merengue is a World Ranking Event and will be the Second Qualifier Tournament for the Pan Am Games.  The tournament will be held at the Archery Facility at the Parque del Este Sports Complex in Santo Domingo. With their participation, this also adds to their world ranking.

Secretary-General of Archery Guyana, Mr. Nicholas Hing, reported on the even further interesting news about this particular competition which will see our two Archers battling for the higher score since that person will be granted the lone invitational spot at the upcoming CAC Games.
