Archery Guyana’s Continental Judge officiates at Archery World Cup
Thursday, Apr 16Archery Guyana Continental Judge, Nicholas Hing joined 16other World Archery International Judges and World Archery Americas Continental Judges for the First Stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in the city of Puebla, Mexico, which ran from April 7 to 12.
The Archery World Cup is an Olympic qualifier which will be heldin 5 stages, with the first one being completed in Puebla, Mexico. The otherswill be held in Shanghai, China in May; Antalya, Turkiye in June; Madrid, Spain in July and finally in Saltillo, Mexico in September.
This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, which featured archers from over 30 countries.
Mr Hing was the first Guyanese to have judged at a World Cup Qualifier event, along with a few other judges, under the leadership of International Judge and WAA Secretary General Sergio Font Milian, and his Deputy Chair Shannon Russel-Cowan.
Official practice started on Tuesday 7, which kept all the judges busy with field, equipment and uniform inspection. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were ranking and elimination rounds. Judges’ meetings were held every morning by the Chair and Deputy Chair before the start of the days’ events to delegate the various tasks to the team.
On Thursday evening all visiting and local teams and officials were invited to dinner and a cultural show hosted by the state of Puebla, and on Friday evening, the teams and officials were invited to the grand opening ceremony resplendent with a laser light show, fireworks, a contortionist archer who shot with her feet, and speeches by officials including the Governor of Puebla, President of World Archery and President of World Archery Mexico.
The Final matches culminated in historic downtown Puebla on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12, with its 450-year-old Cathedral De Puebla as the backdrop. The judges were divided into 2 teams. One team for the medal matches, where the international judges along with some of the continental judges were based at the shooting line and target area, and the second team of continental judges at the practice field. Judge Hing’s team, consisting of several Mexican continental judges, oversaw the coordination of the archers on the practice field before and after each medal match.
World Archery President, Mr Greg Easton personally thanked each judge for a job well done at this first stage of the Hyundai Archery WorldCup.
