Archery Guyana represented at the South American Youth Games, Panama 2026

The bows are ready, the Golden Arrowhead is flying high, and Team Guyana is preparing to make its mark as the country welcomes the Caribbean, Central America and the wider international archery community for a landmark week of competition.

With 75 athletes representing Guyana, the nation is poised to take centre stage at the International Archery Championships, scheduled for October 22–25, 2026, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

The championships represent a significant milestone for Guyanese sport, bringing together regional archers, experienced competitors, developing talent, coaches, technical officials and administrators in an event designed to strengthen sporting relationships, raise competitive standards and expand opportunities for archery throughout the Caribbean and the Americas.

For Guyana, the occasion carries a dual responsibility: to compete with distinction and to demonstrate its capacity to host a major international sporting event with professionalism, pride and the warmth of Guyanese hospitality.

The Guyanese contingent gathered on Sunday, October 18, at the Ramada Princess Hotel, Providence, for an official team briefing chaired by Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, President of Archery Guyana Inc. and Chair of the Local Organising Committee.

The session focused on competition readiness, discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, mental preparation and the responsibility of representing Guyana before a regional and international audience.

Addressing the team, Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon reminded athletes that wearing the national colours means carrying the country's name, values and reputation onto the field of play. “You are not simply participating in a competition. You are representing Guyana,” she emphasised.

She encouraged every member of the contingent to approach the championships with commitment, humility, courage and determination, while respecting fellow competitors, officials and visiting delegations.

She also reminded athletes that success should not be measured by medals alone. Personal improvement, resilience, sportsmanship and the ability to give one's best under pressure are equally important measures of achievement. “I cannot promise you medals, perfect scores or easy matches. No one can. What I can ask of you is that you give this championship your commitment, your courage and your very best effort.”

Her message to the team was clear: every arrow matters, every athlete matters, and every interaction offers an opportunity to represent Guyana positively.

## MORE THAN ARCHERY: YOUNG ATHLETES AS AMBASSADORS FOR GUYANA

Mr. Ryan McKinnon, Guyana's Head Coach and Junior Technical Delegate for the Championships, reinforced the importance of discipline, preparation, teamwork and making the most of the opportunity to compete in an international championship at home.

He challenged the younger members of Team Guyana to look beyond the shooting line and recognise that they also have a role in showcasing the country to visiting athletes and officials.

Drawing on their Social Studies lessons, he encouraged them to engage visitors in conversations about Guyana's geography, history and cultural identity, including the country's major rivers, traditional foods and other features that make Guyana unique.

The message was that representing Guyana extends beyond athletic performance. It also means sharing the country's story, demonstrating its hospitality and ensuring that visitors leave with positive memories of their experience.

In a lighter moment, Mr. McKinnon reminded the athletes of one of the privileges of competing on home soil: “The best part is sleeping in your own bed and having home cooked food.”

The advice reflects one of archery's most important lessons: athletes cannot change an arrow that has already been released, but they can control their preparation, composure and approach to the next shot.

The briefing also featured contributions from Mrs. Narda Mohamed-Mangra, who was appointed Team Manager. She highlighted the importance of coordination, communication and collective responsibility in supporting the delegation throughout the championships.

Ms. Lourdes Mederos, appointed Head Coach for the championships, will play a role in guiding and supporting the athletes during competition.

Mr. Saeed Karim, one of the two Results Managers, also addressed the team on the importance of accurate results management and the technical processes that underpin the fair and efficient administration of an international tournament and the official scoring software, Ianseo.

The distribution of team bags and uniforms further reinforced the shared identity and purpose of the contingent as its members prepare to represent the Golden Arrowhead.

Behind every athlete is a wider network of coaches, managers, technical personnel, volunteers, administrators, families and supporters whose contributions help make international participation possible.

Archery Guyana Inc. expresses its sincere gratitude to Honourable Minister Charles Ramson Jnr. and Minister within the Ministry Honourable Steven Jacobs for their support and commitment to the development of sport in Guyana.

Appreciation is also extended to the National Sports Commission and its Director for their continued role in supporting national sporting development and the advancement of Guyanese athletes.

Archery Guyana Inc. is pleased to announce that Guyana will host a National Judge Seminar from October 26–28, 2026, immediately following the Inaugural 2026 Caribbean Archery Championships and 8th Caribbean Developmental Championships, which will take place at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, from October 22–25.

The seminar forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the technical capacity of archery in Guyana, ensuring that the experience and exposure generated by hosting an international championship are matched by investment in the people responsible for upholding the sport’s standards.

The programme is being facilitated with the support of the Olympic Movement, including Olympic Solidarity, and reflects the importance of technical education and capacity building in the continued development of sport.

The seminar will be facilitated by Randall D. Jones of Canada, a Continental Judge with World Archery Americas, a member of its Constitution and Rules Committee, and Technical Editor for the World Archery Constitution and Rules Committee. He is also a retired World Archery International Judge.

Mr. Jones will guide participants through the principles, rules and procedures governing archery competitions, using seminar materials, case studies and practical examples to strengthen their understanding of the responsibilities of a judge.

The programme will draw on the World Archery Rulebooks, the Judges’ Guidebook and the National Judge Manual. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of competition procedures, equipment requirements, scoring, safety and the consistent application of the rules.

Judges play a critical role in archery, ensuring that competitions are conducted fairly, safely and in accordance with the applicable rules. Developing knowledgeable and competent technical officials is therefore essential to maintaining the integrity of the sport and supporting the growth of competitive archery at national and regional levels.

The timing of the seminar is particularly significant. Following four days of international competition in Guyana, the seminar will provide a further opportunity to strengthen the country’s technical expertise and contribute to the long-term development of archery.

The championships and the seminar represent complementary investments: one brings athletes and officials together through international competition, while the other develops the knowledge and skills required to support future competitions.

Guyana to Host National Archery Judge Seminar Following International Championships

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana Inc. is pleased to announce that Guyana will host a World Archery Level 2 Coaching Course from October 26–30, 2026, to be held at the Olympic House, Liliendaal, East Coast demerara.

The continental coaching development programme is being delivered in collaboration with World Archery Americas, with support through Olympic Solidarity, and provides an important development opportunity for National Federations within the Americas.

The course comes immediately on the heels of the 2026 Caribbean Archery Championships and 8th Caribbean Developmental Championships, which will be hosted by Guyana from October 22–25 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. 

The back-to-back international competition and coach education programmes represent a significant investment in the continued development of archery in Guyana. While the championships will provide athletes and officials with an international competition platform, the Level 2 course will focus on strengthening the technical capacity of coaches who will support the next generation of Guyanese archers.

World Archery identifies coach education as a key component of athlete development. Its Level 2 coaching programme addresses intermediate coaching skills, including advanced technique, equipment study and tuning, biomechanics and psychology. 

The participants will join a structured programme designed to enhance their coaching knowledge and practical skills and to strengthen the coaching pathway available to athletes in Guyana. Leading the course will be WA Certified Coach Trainer Mrs. Ludys Tejada together with Assistant Trainer and Guyana's Level 2 Coach Mr. Ryan McKinnon.

Archery Guyana's President, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, welcomed the opportunity, noting that the timing of the programme creates a unique continuum from international competition to technical development. “It is particularly meaningful that immediately after Guyana hosts an international archery championship, we will welcome a continental-level coaching development programme. We are not simply bringing an event to Guyana; we are using the opportunity to build capacity that will remain long after the medals have been awarded.”

World Archery Level 2 Coaching Course to be Held in Guyana Following International Archery Championships

Guyanese archers have made a strong impression in the inaugural Caribbean Premier Archery League (CPAL), with 17 Guyanese archers participating and Guyana securing an impressive seven individual medals being three gold, two silver and two bronze.

The results represent a significant achievement for Guyanese archery and demonstrate the growing depth of talent across the country's senior and youth divisions.

The Caribbean Premier Archery League (CPAL) is a new permanent annual competition platform sanctioned by World Archery Americas (WAA). CPAL was specifically developed for the Caribbean, providing archers across the region with an opportunity to compete at a high, internationally recognised standard without the prohibitive cost associated with frequent cross-border travel. The league combines standardised World Archery competition formats, modern digital submission of results and certified national-level officiating, creating a verifiable and competitive league environment operating to the standards required for a WAA-sanctioned event.

For developing Caribbean archers, the league therefore provides an important pathway to gain meaningful competitive experience, measure their performances against athletes from across the region and prepare for larger regional and international competitions.

Guyana's medal-winning performances came across both the Barebow and Recurve divisions.

The three results produced a particularly impressive Guyanese clean sweep of the Senior Women's Barebow podium, with all three medals going to Guyanese archers.

Guyana Archers Capture Seven Medals in Inaugural Caribbean Premier Archery League

Archery Guyana proudly announces the affiliation of "Oasis Archers," a dynamic addition to the archery community in Guyana.  Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, President of Archery Guyana warmly welcomed President Centhia Cross and the Executive Committee of Oasis Archers into its fold, congratulating them on marking a significant milestone in the sport's growth and development within the nation.

President Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon expressed her enthusiasm for the affiliation, stating, "We are delighted to welcome Oasis Archers into the Archery Guyana family. Their dedication to the sport and commitment to fostering a thriving archery community align perfectly with our mission and values."

Ms. Centhia Cross, President of Oasis Archers, shared her excitement about joining Archery Guyana, saying, "We are thrilled to become part of Archery Guyana and look forward to contributing to the growth of archery in our country. With access to resources and support from the national governing body, we are confident in our ability to provide opportunities for archers of all levels to thrive."

The affiliation process with Archery Guyana is straightforward and accessible to all clubs interested in joining the association. Clubs can initiate the affiliation process by contacting Archery Guyana directly and submitting the necessary documentation. Once approved, affiliated clubs gain access to a wealth of resources and support to enhance their operations and promote the sport of archery within their communities.

Affiliation with Archery Guyana offers clubs like Oasis Archers access to a wide range of benefits, including participation in sanctioned events, coaching and development programs, and other benefits through Archery Guyana's affiliation with World Archery, the international governing body for the sport.

President of Archery Guyana Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon took the opportunity to give an overview as to the affiliation process which is straightforward and designed to streamline the integration of clubs into the federation. She indicated that Clubs interested in affiliating with Archery Guyana are invited to express their interest by contacting the federation directly. This can be done via email, phone, or through the website or the various social platforms. Upon expressing interest, clubs will be provided with the necessary documentation and forms required for affiliation. These documents include inter alia an application form, club constitution, a list of executive members democratically elected. Once the completed documentation is submitted, Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon indicated that "our federation will review the application to ensure compliance with our affiliation requirements. This process may involve a review of the club's structure, activities, and alignment with our federation's values and objectives." Upon successful review and approval, the club will receive official confirmation of its affiliation with Archery Guyana. This confirmation opens the door to a wealth of benefits and opportunities for the club and its members including:

* Participation in national and international competitions and events.
* Access to coaching and training resources.
* Networking opportunities with other affiliated clubs and organisations.
* Recognition and visibility as part of the national archery community.
* Support and guidance from the federation's leadership team.

New Archery Club 'Oasis Archers' Affiliates with Archery Guyana

The students and teachers of the Saraswati Vidya Niketan were on Monday, May 8, 2023 treated to an exciting introduction to the sport of archery, by Archery Guyana. National Head Coach Nicholas Hing and Chair of the Tech Committee Saeed Karim, visited the school to give demonstrations and have the excited students (and teachers) try out the sport themselves.

Initial discussions had been held between the Principal Swami Aksharananda and Mr Hing on introducing the archery to the school in its ongoing National Development Program, in which Swamiji wholeheartedly agreed to have the sport introduced to the school.

At the gathering, the students were informed of the school forming the next school club for developing archers from the grassroots to be able eventually represent compete locally, regionally or internationally, with the ultimate goal of representing Guyana on the Olympic stage.

Archery introduced to SVN School

Santa Rosa is a community in the Barima-Waini region of northern Guyana and the village is part of the North West Amerindian District. Santa Rosa's burgeoning archery community welcomes a new addition to its ranks with the establishment of the "Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters" Archery club. Recently affiliated to the governing body, “Archery Guyana”, the club sets its sights on promoting the sport of archery in the region under the adept guidance of Archery Guyana's certified Level 1 coach, Carlos Henry.

Led by a dedicated team, the affiliated Club's executive board comprises individuals deeply committed to fostering a thriving archery culture within Santa Rosa. Mr. Carlos Henry assumes the pivotal role of Chairperson, bringing his expertise and passion for the sport to the forefront. Joining him is Stafon Wilson as Vice Chair, Amanda Daniels as Secretary, Wesley Fredericks as Treasurer, Mathew Adrian as Publicity Officer, Caela Rodrigues and Jannel Da Silva as Record Officers, and Stephan Bacchus as Equipment Officer.

President of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon expressed great delight in the new affiliate club and noted that "With the formation of the Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters, there is now a structured avenue platform for enthusiasts of all skill levels to engage in the exhilarating sport of archery." She went on to commend Carlos Henry, Chairperson of the club stating that "Under the mentorship of National Archery Coach Henry, I am confident Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters Club will be committed to nurturing talent, fostering camaraderie, and promoting sportsmanship within the community."

The “Santa Rosa Sharp Shooters” look forward to welcoming members of all ages and backgrounds to join them in their journey towards excellence in archery. As they embark on this exciting endeavor, the club remains dedicated to upholding the principles of inclusivity, integrity, and respect and to work together with the National Federation, Archery Guyana to continue to promote the sport throughout our beloved country.
