Archery Guyana represented at the South American Youth Games, Panama 2026

The National Indoor Championship 2026 hosted by Archery Guyana concluded efficaciously last Sunday at the iconic Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Archery competitions requires a minimum of two days, in which both days saw exciting and high-level competition, sportsmanship and camaraderie among archery athletes from across Guyana.

The championship brought together athletes from clubs including Pro Archers, Bow Nation, The Archery Guild and Golden League Archery and some independent archers. Competitors contested in Recurve, Compound and Barebow divisions across senior and youth categories. The event showcased the continued growth and development of the sport of archery in Guyana, quite notably the increased number of youth archers whose performances drew admiration from spectators and officials alike.

At the medal presentation ceremony, remarks were delivered by President of the Guyana Olympic Association, Godfrey Munroe, who commended Archery Guyana for its organisation, discipline and commitment to athlete development. He congratulated the athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers for contributing to another successful national championship.

Medals were presented by President of Archery Guyana, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, Assistant Director of Sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson, President of the Guyana Olympic Association Mr. Godfrey Munroe, Vice-Chair of the National Sports Commission and Vice-President of the Guyana Olympic Association, Cristy Campbell, along with special guests Cubie Seegobin and Jacqueline Seegobin.

During her remarks, Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and volunteers whose efforts made the championship possible. She specially recognised National Judge and Director of Shooting, Ryan McKinnon, whose acknowledgment was met with resounding applause from the gathering in appreciation of his tireless dedication to the sport and leadership behind the scenes and throughout the competition.

Archery Guyana additionally expressed appreciation to the Judges, Ryan McKinnon,  Robert Singh and Afzal Karim who ensured the event was conducted in accordance with World Archery standards. Also the competition committee, volunteers, range officials, set-up team and all supporting personnel from the Competitions Committee whose collective efforts contributed to the professional execution of the event.

The federation applauded the efficiency of the results and technical team for their efficient use of the internationally recognised IANSEO Scoring software which facilitated accurate scoring and live result updates throughout the championship. Thanks were extended to Results Manager Mr. Saeed Karim and Results Verifier Ms. Anoopa Ramdial. 

Official signalling and timing was done automatically by Archery Guyana’s newly acquired TS archery timer and signalling equipment, which the Federation recently invested significantly in. This system was purchased to ensure that Guyanese archers attain experience and can compete at home with feedback from international level rated equipment which is approved by World Archery Americas. It is noted that while an international level Archery specific shooting facility is not yet operated by Archery Guyana, the board continues to equip the Federation with high quality assets for when that facility is made a reality. 

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana extended sincere thanks to the Honourable Minister Charles Ramson, Honourable Minister within the Ministry Mr. Steven Jacobs, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, the National Sports Commission, Facility Supervisor Roy MacArthur and the dedicated staff of the Sports Hall for their invaluable support and assistance in ensuring the smooth execution of the championship.

Special appreciation was also expressed to our longstanding sponsor, Guyana Beverages Inc. for providing Oasis Water and Altitude Energy Drinks to keep athletes, officials and volunteers hydrated throughout the event.

The federation thanked Dr. Ariane Mangar, Vanessa Wickham and Aretha Legall for their collaboration and support in providing physiotherapy services to athletes during the championship.

Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon also announced that Archery Guyana will soon commence vision screening and bloodwork initiatives for athletes and officials as part of the federation’s growing commitment to athlete welfare, health monitoring and high-performance development.

Archery Guyana shows major growth as National Indoor Championship 2026 is completed at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Archery Guyana officially declared open its 2026 Indoor National Championships today on May 16, 2026 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, marking what has been recorded as the largest indoor archery competition in the Federation’s history.

The Championships were formally opened by Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, President of Archery Guyana, who welcomed athletes, officials, and supporters gathered for the national event.

In her opening remarks, Mrs. Persaud-McKinnon expressed delight at seeing many new faces participating alongside returning archers, noting that this balance reflects the continued growth, development, and renewed energy within the sport of archery in Guyana. She highlighted that national championships remain a special occasion, bringing together athletes, coaches, officials, parents, and supporters united by a shared passion for archery and a commitment to excellence.

Special thanks were extended to the Competitions Committee of Archery Guyana for their extensive preparation and coordination. Following the playing of the Guyana National Anthem, the Championships were officially declared open, with the President encouraging archers to compete with confidence, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

A total of 56 participants from affiliated clubs and the Federation competed, making the 2026 edition the largest Indoor Nationals staged to date.



Athlete Welfare and Sports Science Support

Professional physiotherapist Reshonah Gordon was present during opening day and will continue throughout the Championships, providing essential medical and recovery support to athletes. This collaboration continues through the invaluable support of Vanessa Wickham, the National Sports Clinic, and Dr. Ariane Mangar of the Ministry of Health Guyana.

Archery Guyana reaffirmed its commitment to integrating sports science into its programmes, strengthening athlete care systems and supporting improved performance both locally and internationally.



Competition Officials and Technical Team

The tournament was officiated by National Archery Judges under the leadership of Ryan McKinnon, Director of Shooting, whose management ensured safe, smooth, and efficient competition operations. Line and Target judging duties were carried out by Judges Robert Singh and Afzal Karim, who upheld the rules, standards, and integrity of the sport.

Technical scoring operations were managed by Results Manager Saeed Karim, with verification support provided by Anoopa Ramdial, ensuring accurate scoring and timely publication of results throughout the Championship.

Official event photography was conducted by Bidesh Dwarka, and a link providing access to all photographs will be made available shortly via Archery Guyana’s website.

Archery Guyana extended special appreciation to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Guyana, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, Roy MacArthur, Facility Supervisor of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, and the staff of CASH for their continued support in facilitating the Championships.

The Federation also conveyed sincere gratitude to Guyana Beverages Inc. for its generous sponsorship through the provision of Oasis Water and Altitude sports drinks, ensuring athletes remained hydrated and able to perform at their best throughout the competition.

Finals Continue Tomorrow

The 2026 Indoor National Championships will continue on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, with competition resuming at 9:00 a.m. and the Finals scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., concluding at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Archery Guyana Continental Judge, Nicholas Hing joined 16other World Archery International Judges and World Archery Americas Continental Judges for the First Stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in the city of Puebla, Mexico, which ran from April 7 to 12. 

The Archery World Cup is an Olympic qualifier which will be heldin 5 stages, with the first one being completed in Puebla, Mexico. The otherswill be held in Shanghai, China in May; Antalya, Turkiye in June; Madrid, Spain in July and finally in Saltillo, Mexico in September. 

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, which featured archers from over 30 countries.

Mr Hing was the first Guyanese to have judged at a World Cup Qualifier event, along with a few other judges, under the leadership of International Judge and WAA Secretary General Sergio Font Milian, and his Deputy Chair Shannon Russel-Cowan. 

Official practice started on Tuesday 7, which kept all the judges busy with field, equipment and uniform inspection. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were ranking and elimination rounds. Judges’ meetings were held every morning by the Chair and Deputy Chair before the start of the days’ events to delegate the various tasks to the team.

On Thursday evening all visiting and local teams and officials were invited to dinner and a cultural show hosted by the state of Puebla, and on Friday evening, the teams and officials were invited to the grand opening ceremony resplendent with a laser light show, fireworks, a contortionist archer who shot with her feet, and speeches by officials including the Governor of Puebla, President of World Archery and President of World Archery Mexico.

The Final matches culminated in historic downtown Puebla on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12, with its 450-year-old Cathedral De Puebla as the backdrop. The judges were divided into 2 teams. One team for the medal matches, where the international judges along with some of the continental judges were based at the shooting line and target area, and the second team of continental judges at the practice field. Judge Hing’s team, consisting of several Mexican continental judges, oversaw the coordination of the archers on the practice field before and after each medal match. 

World Archery President, Mr Greg Easton personally thanked each judge for a job well done at this first stage of the Hyundai Archery WorldCup. 

“Since becoming a continental judge, I have had the good fortune of working with many wonderful judges from around the world, and this was no different, except this Archery World Cup Qualifier will be one of my most memorable experiences, especially working directly under Mr Sergio Font.”Hing said.

Scores of Archers shoot for Gold at Archery Guyana’s 2025 National Indoor Championships.

While heavy rainstorms enveloped Guyana last weekend, it made for ideal environment for indoor archery, as proven over the weekend when Archery Guyana successfully hosted the 2025 National Indoor Archery Championships at the Sophia Exhibition Centre. The Federation motivated some 43 archers and their support personnel from across Guyana to brave the weather and come out to give an impressive display of precision, discipline, competitive excellence and mental fortitude in high level competition.

The two-day championship showcased the nation’s expanding talent pool across archery disciplines of recurve, compound, and barebow divisions. On Saturday morning Archery Athletes left their homes amongst the croaking of frogs and persistent pitter patter of raindrops making damp journey to compete in qualification rounds in the sport they love. Sunday was a similar in nature before the start of elimination matches and finals. Results of these championships contribute to national rankings and data collection to be used for national team consideration and historical records, reinforcing the importance within the local archery calendar of these ranking events.

Archery Guyana commends the commitment and resilience of the Organising Committee, athletes, coaches, officials, and families who ensured the event proceeded successfully despite challenging weather conditions.

With almost 50 participants registered, several high-level performances were seen together with increasing youth engagement. The 2025 National Indoor Championships represent another important milestone in the continued growth and development of archery in Guyana and attracted participation from various clubs such as Bow Nation, Golden League Archery, Pro Archers Guyana, Qayyim Archery and independent archers.

Line and Target judging duties were carried out by Judges Afzal Karim and Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon. Judges ensure rules are abided by while upholding the standards and integrity of the sport. Technical scoring operations were managed by Results Manager Saeed Karim, with verification support provided by Anoopa Ramdial, ensuring accurate scoring and timely results throughout the championship.

Special appreciation were extended to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Roger Rogers, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, and Ms. Chester and the staff of the Sophia Exhibition Centre for their support.

On Saturday, February 4, Archery Guyana Head Coach Nicholas Hing, presented to Qayyim Academy’s Principal Bibi Romena Constantine-Mohamed, their official certificate of registration and affiliation together with a bow and arrow set, at a simple ceremony in the school’s compound.

“Qayyim Academy”, also the name of the school’s archery club has been quite active for a few months now under the instruction of Archery Guyana member Mr Saeed Karim who is also a teacher there, along with the support from Archery Guyana’s head coach other members from time to time and Miss Romena, as she is normally addressed by her students and teachers, is very enthusiastic about having the students involved in sports and is excited to have archery as one of the sports developed in school.

The club has already built their own targets and quivers, and has also acquired some equipment in the form of bows and arrows.
This is another step in Archery Guyana’s vision of developing the sport at the grass roots level beginning in the schools with the aim of discovering and encouraging athletes from the primary to the university level. Thereby ensuring the widest possible participation in its effort to find the best Archers to represent Guyana both regionally and Internationally, specifically at the Olympic games.

Archery Guyana is committed to providing the necessary training for instructors and certified coaches and judges, both junior and senior. With this in mind, Archery Guyana sees archery as an additional event at school sports; Inter-house, Inter-schools and Nationals, thereby fostering a competitive spirit among students and the camaraderie that archery is internationally known for.

Archery Guyana proudly hosted the 2024 National Indoor Recurve Open on January 18-19, 2025, at the Cyril Potter College of Education Auditorium, Turkeyen Campus, East Coast Demerara. This highly anticipated event brought together archers from across the nation to compete in an atmosphere charged with excitement, camaraderie, and high-performance standards.

Continuing its trailblazing efforts, Archery Guyana ensured the presence of a professional physiotherapist to provide vital support to athletes. Physiotherapist Stowell Barry, a skilled practitioner with a passion for sports therapy, was on-site to deliver tailored treatments that enhanced athlete performance and reduced injury risks.

This initiative, now a hallmark of Archery Nationals, was made possible through the invaluable collaboration of Ms. Vanessa Wickham, the National Sports Clinic, and Dr. Ariane Mangar from the Ministry of Health. 

Archery Guyana once again raised the bar by streaming the competition live and utilising the globally recognised IANSEO software for real-time scoring. This ensured immediate updates for athletes, coaches, and fans, adding to the electrifying atmosphere of the event.

The competition delivered riveting performances and showcased the talent and resilience of the participants:

In the Women’s category, Roshini Boodhoo delivered a commanding performance to claim the gold medal, with Karin Toppin earning silver in a spirited showing by the female archers.

In the men's category, the bronze medal match captivated spectators as Jeewanram Persaud faced off against the 2024 Barebow gold medallist. In a tightly contested battle, Jeewanram emerged victorious, solidifying his place on the podium.

The gold medal match between veteran archer Sean Duncan and newcomer Lucas Chung was the highlight of the event. Chung, competing in his first national competition, held his nerve to tie with Duncan in regulation rounds. The tension peaked as the match went to a one-arrow shoot-off, where Chung’s precision secured him the gold medal.

The Results Management Team led by Results Manager Ms. Anopa Ramdial and Results Verifier KARIM Asiyah & SHAKEEM Idrees released the official results as follows:
